Barbara J. Green-Works
Barbara J. Green-Works was born on August 4, 1944 in Chicago, Illinois to the union of Leon C. Green and Dethel [Blackmond] Green]. Both her parents and oldest brother, Leon C. Green, Jr., sister, Leona Goffner and brother, Michael R. Green preceded her in death. Barbara J Green-Works was married to her husband Clarence E. Works for 59-years, in keeping with their vows given in Gods’ house, for richer or for poorer, till death do us part. Barbara J. Green-Works departed this life on December 8, 2020.
During the summer of 1959, Barbara met Clarence E. Works her future husband while attending church services, at his father’s church, The North Side Church of God in Christ, Chicago, Illinois, as he sang praises of God from the choir stand. From that moment on both of their lives changed forever. The two of them were inseparable. Under the guidance of both families Barbara’s relationship with Clarence matured thus seeding an everlasting love affair that lasted over 60-plus years. During Barbara’s teenage years she enjoyed living at home with her parents and siblings, going to church, roller skating, going to the movies with Clarence, attending activity nights at Waller High School and Wells High School, dancing, attending the ROTC Ball at Waller High School with Clarence and her career in modeling clothes at Macys downtown showroom in Chicago, Illinois. She was a good-looking young lady and she knew it. Barbara loved her life and she showed it. After receiving numerous proposals of marriage from Clarence Barbara and Clarence were happily married in Holy Matrimony on, August 1, 1962. Barbara’s husband, Clarence, was an active-duty officer in the US Army therefor Barbara would join him wherever he was stationed around the world.
To the union of Barbara Jean Green-Works and Clarence Edward Works two children were born, Phillip Works and Bridget Ann Works. Each of them will always cherish and love their mother. Barbara was a loving sibling who would do whatever she could to help her greater family. On many occasions she would agree to rear her sibling’s children as she traveled, with her two children and husband from one duty station to another duty station to ensure that the children in question were properly cared for and out of peril. Barbara would also ensure, when asked, that her siblings had transportation, housing, food, and clothing by assisting them in their endeavors to obtain these services and/or items. Barbara loved family and would try to keep everyone in good spirits. Barbara invited them to church affairs, her home for dinner and/or birthday parties, lavish ballroom celebrations, and paid vacations.
Barbara loved God and was an avid church goer and attended church regularly with her husband at Apostolic Faith Church of God, Chicago, Illinois. Barbara also loved life and herself by continuing her education and by mentoring young adults while a member of South Western Missionary Baptist Church, Chicago, Illinois. By the way, Barbara loved dancing, ballroom and R&B.
Barbara was employed as a Manager in the financial business world and managed various companies throughout Chicago. Barbara retired in the year 2010.
Barbara is survived by her loving husband Clarence E. Works, children, Phillip Works of Chicago, Illinois; Bridget A Mabon [Kedric] of Lindenhurst, Illinois and Stepdaughter Cynthia Walker [Sammy] of Memphis Tennessee. Grandchildren; Kevon, Step Grandchildren Kendall, Jamie, Sammy Jr, Chauncey, Joshua; Siblings Richard Green of Chicago, Illinois; Florence [Ezell] preceded in death] Blake of Chicago, Illinois; Delores Arnold of Chicago, Illinois; Argerite Nottage of Chicago, Illinois, and many Step greatgrandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
