Eunice Harris - Gordon

April 3, 1946 — July 9, 2022

This Very Special Obituary was written by Eunice Harris-Gordon.

Eunice Harris-Gordon was born in Tutwiler, Mississippi, on April 3, 1946, to Will and Annie Mae Harris. As a child, she lived on a plantation and moved at the age of 13 to Merigold, Mississippi, with her mother and siblings.

Eunice attended Tutwiler Elementary School up to the 6th grade. At 13 years old, she picked cotton for three to four years. In 1963, Eunice and her two children, Barbara and Russell, moved to Chicago, Illinois, with her sister Deloise and her family. A few years later, she gave birth to Nathaniel and George. Eunice was united in holy matrimony by her uncle Reverend Felix Martin to her childhood sweetheart George Gordon, and they established a good foundation for their family.

Eunice gave her life to Christ early in Tutwiler, Mississippi, at Mount Zion Baptist Church, where the late Reverend King was the pastor. After moving to Chicago, Illinois, she joined the Friendship Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Roosevelt Wiley. She later joined the Stone Temple Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor J.M. Stone. While attending Stone Temple Baptist Church, Eunice met the Reverend C.L. Norman. God led her to follow him to the New Genesis Assembly of God Baptist Church, where she frequently attended until her health failed her.

Eunice was employed at Harold’s Liquor Store on Homan for five years and the Cabrini Green Grocery and Liquor Store for ten years. She also worked at the15th Homan Liquor Store for two years and later at the gas station on Roosevelt for four years. Her last place of employment was at Chanel's Place, a private daycare home, where she helped to care for many children. They affectionately called her “Granny.” She fondly called them Granny's Mamas or Granny's Men. They loved her, and she loved them. She loved advising young parents on how to raise their children based on her life experiences.

Eunice loved God! She also had an affection for plants, cooking, sewing, playing cards, cats, and her personal and church friends. She loved to dress in the finest suits and matching hats. She loved rosy red fingernail polish. Most of all, she loved her children, grandchildren, siblings, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

Eunice is preceded in death by her parents, Will and Annie Mae Harris; her sons, Russell Harris Senior and Nathaniel Harris; and siblings: Mildred Glass, Bessie Mae Barron, Lucy Strong, Deloise Fair, JW Barron, Sammy Harris, and James Jasper Jr.
