Obituary for Jennie Lee Allen Burton
Jennie Lee Allen Burton, born January 1, 1934, in Tunica, Mississippi, was the beloved eldest child of Albert and Corrine Allen. Raised on a plantation where her parents were sharecroppers, Jennie’s early life was marked by resilience, hard work, and a deep-rooted faith that would guide her throughout her life. Fondly known as “Tea” or “TT,” Jennie’s determination and love of learning propelled her from her humble beginnings to a life dedicated to education and service. After moving to Chicago, she earned her Bachelor’s from Alcorn State University and a Master’s in Education from National Louis University, dedicating over 30 years to teaching special education within the Chicago Public Schools and advocating for her students’ success.
Jennie’s devotion to her community extended beyond the classroom. She was an active member of her church and participated in the Operation PUSH choir and other church groups. Her spiritual journey led her to author two books, The Gift of Prayer and Reflections, sharing her profound faith and offering hope and healing to others. Her life was a testament to love, resilience, and the importance of serving others.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Clarence Burton, Jr.; daughters LaGloria (Leonard) and Deborah; sister Verdean Buford; grandchildren Myles (Lindsay), Robyn (Raheem), Victoria, and Raven; and great-grandchildren Montana, Arya, and Ilana. Jennie departed this life on November 6, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, and inspiration that will be cherished by all who knew her.
