Roderick T. Gill Sr affectionately known as “Big Daddy” was born in Chicago, Illinois on June 7th, 1953. He died in Waukegan, Illinois on May 30th, 2020. Roderick is survived by his wife, Janice Norfleet – Gill of North Chicago, Illinois, children: Kamecka (Indiana), Joy (Chicago), Jade (Oklahoma), Roderick Jr. and Jewel (North Chicago). Grandchildren: Brianna, Tashea, JaBriel Sr., Josiah, JaLiyah, and Kenadi. Great – Grandchildren: Ja’Niyah, JaBriel Jr., Jayla, Leanna, Ja’Bari, and Isaiah. Sisters in-law: Joanne Patton (Howard) and Loretta Young. Brothers in-law; Gerome Norfleet and Kenneth Hampton. Aunt Emily Salley, Uncle John D. R. Gill Sr., Uncle Herman Coleman and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He shared a special bond with his cousin Larry Gill. Preceded in death by his parents, Laura and Sidney Edwards, son Titus James Smalls, and sister in law Dessa Hampton.
Roderick (Big Daddy) was known for his infectious smile, timely wit, and endless conversation. He was very outspoken, knowledgeable, and willing to inform anyone on various subjects. A “super-hero” to his loved ones, you could count on him to fight with you and for you. Roderick also had a special way with words, he was a linguist in his own right. Roderick was a loving husband and father who had deep, abiding, unconditional love for his family and friends.
Roderick loved sports; he was a die-hard Chicago fan. He enjoyed music, playing cards, bowling, and fishing. In his spare time, you would catch him at a card party or heading to the lanes for pot bowling. Over the years, Big Daddy was a part of many leagues in the Lake County area where he acquired amazing, long-lasting friendships which felt like more like family.
Roderick grew up on Chicago’s West side, where he attended Austin College and Career Academy. From there he entered the United States Navy where he served for several years. Roderick enjoyed driving, he was a dedicated chauffer for over 20 years with various limousine and taxi services. As a well known “compass”, he used his detailed geographic skills to maneuver across the country. Roderick was beloved by those he worked for and those he worked with.
