William Veal

William Veal, Sr.…husband, son, brother, father, uncle, cousin, grandfather, and friend departed this life October 21, 2019 at 10:30 a.m.

William was bornDecember 20, 1940 in Indianola, MS to Lettie and William Veal. He was the oldest of three children. William’s parents both preceded him in death.William’s brothers:Preston, Matthew, and Henry Veal and sister,Estella Whitten and brother-in-law, Maurice Catchings, all preceded him in death. William was educated in the Mississippi school system where he attended Gentry school in Indianola, MS. This is where he met Isabel Spann. They later married on March 8, 1961 and to this union five children were born. William was committed to his professional development and continued his education by obtaining certifications in Metalworking and Air Conditioning, Refrigeration & Heating. William and his family were part of the southern migration from Mississippi and moved north to Chicago for better employment opportunities.

He worked at Mercy Hospital, Werd & Schaefer, Reckitt Benckiser and several other reputable firms. William loved God and accepted Christ at an early age. He was a member of New Macedonia Baptist Church under the Pastorship of George H. Bowen, Jr. William loved basketball and the Chicago Bulls, baseball and the Chicago Cubs, he collected baseball cards and coins, liked taking pictures with polaroid cameras, donated to numerous charities, and had a special relationship with his favorite older brother Henry, who preceded him in death.William loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.

William would frequently lend a helping hand to his friends and family. William was quiet and reserved; however, he didn’t miss an opportunity to crack a joke. His favorite saying was “you’re not worth a dime”!!! William suffered a stroke and a heart attack in August 2016 and was bedridden and cared for at a nursing home facility. William spent his remaining days in the nursing home continuing to remain quiet and reserved …unless he felted compelled to talk. During William’s final days, he sung the words to one of his favorite songs “Take me out to the ball game”. He sung his favorite tune while visiting with his sister Florence and brother-in-law Guss. William laughed and smiled at the end of the song. William will truly be missed by all.

William married Martha Loganon August 2, 1997 where they nurtured a blended family. His son Joseph Logan preceded him in death.
